We haven’t been off-island much these last six months due to the pandemic, so decided that a family getaway would be a lovely way to mark the end of summer before school started this month. So we packed up the car and drove over the mountains and across the central Washington plains, finally arriving joyfully at the family cabin on Lake Coeur d’Alene in the Idaho panhandle. Pictured, the first morning and last afternoon at the lake, the latter right before cutting our stay short and driving through the night (and through upwards of 450 AQI levels) to get safely back home.
Though Fidalgo Island wasn’t nearly as bad as many other parts of the west, we still stayed inside as much as possible for the next week, waiting for the weather to shift and the smoke to disperse.
Our thoughts go out to the millions of people affected by these fires, as we demand that our leaders be more pro-active in battling the climate crisis that is already causing harm to us all.
